Organ Mountain High School will host the Third Annual Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Poetry Contest ceremony and reading on Monday, May 20 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Guests are invited to gather for the reading in the Performing Arts Center at OMHS. Five high school poets will read their winning poems, introduced by Ben Trujillo with the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Memorial Foundation. Ben is Trujillo’s surviving husband and represents the Foundation with their three children and other community members. Since its inception in 2022, the Foundation has secured $430,000 for endowed scholarships for prospective teachers in New Mexico across seven universities.
Karen Trujillo was a lifelong educator and accomplished poet. To honor her legacy, a poetry contest was established in 2022 and is open to all high school students in Las Cruces Public Schools. Winners are eligible for cash prizes. The contest is administrated by Tim Staley, an LCPS educator and area poet.
